Intro

Combining interests in polyhedral geometry, Sci-Fi animation, and the translation of 2d patterns into 3d objects, the art of Eric Justin Smail takes the viewer on a journey into a boldly colored world, that forms a personal, futuristic architecture.

Process

Carefully chosen color harmonies, and an almost fanatical attention to detail consistently appear in the artist’s paintings on paper, complex paper sculptures, and wildly patterned installations. The balance of void and solid is modulated by asymmetrical cropping in order to avoid the monotonous composition that sometimes appear in visual works generated by mathematical formulae.

Growth

What began as small, hard-edge paintings, grew into the paper sculptures which are made from thousands of individual parts. The artist’s work explores the interaction of colors, as well as the groups of regular and irregular polyhedrons he constructs out of paper. The end result is a strange grouping, clusters of polyhedrons that look both organic and geometric. Eric Justin Smail is now working on a series of large scale installations which up the ante in terms of both the scale, and the density of architectonic color geometries.
